Thumping noise after backing up and aplying brake .

I have a 2003 ford escape xlt 4wd, and several
times now when i back up, at a slow speed and
then apply the brake theres a very pronounced
thumping noise.

If you have drum brakes in the rear, you need to remove and clean the drums and adjust or replace the brake shoes. And the drum if necessary. That thumping is usually from brake dust filling up in the drum and causing the shoes to stick on the drum momentarily before releasing usually 1-4 seconds after you release the brakes
