You'll need a volt meter which reads DC. Remove the plug from the motor. Insert the test ends of the meter into each slot. Press down and read voltage, if any. Now switch leads into opposite slots and test again. The motor is DC, meaning polarity is reversed to the motor to make it operate in opposite directions. If you do not get a reading of +12 or -12 volts on one side, checking the wiring to the motor.
