What causes a rattle or clatter in the clutch when not depressed in shifting

86 Bronco II 5 speed trans. when you push in clutch to shift gears it is normal, but when releasing the clutch there is a rattle or clattering. I don't think there is anything wrong with the throw-out bearing as there is no noise when it is depressed.

If you hear the chattering noise as you're releasing the clutch, it's usually a sign of a worn clutch. Worn pilot bearings or worn or oil-contaminated disk faces. Sometimes a leaky rear main seal or front tranny seal can cause oil-contamination of the clutch. Crawl under there and see if you can see any oil or wetness around the clutch housing. You don't mention how many miles on this clutch, but being an 86 you might be overdue for a rebuild.

It could be but in my 78 years of working on old vehicles I never heard a throw out bearing squawking without punching in the clutch.
