If you still have the vehicle it could be a faulty ECU, distributor pickup coil (sometimes called cam sensor) or bad auto shut down relay #25 in fuse block next to battery I've had the same issue with my 99dakota sport 3.9 happen today cooled then ran fine, I tapped my ECU and it instantly died dash said can no bus if this happened with that and nothing else that I've mentioned is old it's a faulty ECU. You can pick up a ECU at a scrap yard but try to match year and engine in your vehicle as best as possible, or car computer exchange will send a rebuilt one to you if you provide miles, and vehicle VIN then send you old ECU to them cost about $200 which is better than a dealer price of $1000-$1,500

99 Dodge Dakota SLT While driving at any speed and even idling sometimes will just seem to lose fuel/fire just shuts down no shuddering no noise no backfire its like I turned it off myself.....After various different minutes it will crank I can go a little further it will start again, This is going to kill me or someone or both, or my son, I changed the Ignition Coil {that I did not know it had} and still it has shutting down but seems to be better if that makes sense....someone said cam or crank sensor those are next....I WILL keep posted as to help thousands or millions with the same issue, If you know if these will fix please help others and say so.
