Don't know what else is wrong with your car,. BUT, I generally think it's best to switch cars at 12 years and based on your experience, you're right there now with or without this disaster. A new transmission is thousands, or you could try a rebuilt or exchange, but, I'd still get rid of the car pretty quickly. You're going to have to evaluate whether fixing the car is worth getting a better price.
