Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1987 325 BMW that I just purchased.  There was excessive noise from the valves.  I adjusted the valves to 10thousand hoping this would correct my problem but it didn't.  If there is anything else I can do to correct this problem please let me know.

Hi Ronald815, The valves may not be the only problem you're having. Noisy valves can also mean that your lifters are not working properly. These may need replacing as well. Depending on your mechanical ability this may not be a job you want to undertake. Good luck!

I've owned several mid to late 80s 3 series bimmers and noisy valves are common with those engines (2.5 and 2.7 liter straight six, 325e/325es/325i/325is/325iX). If they are excessively noisy, with very high mileage, (also if someone could have adjusted them too tight) it could had imbedded a groove in the cam shaft lobes. If so you would have to replace the cam shaft, since adjusting the valves would not make a difference.
