Garage left my oil cap off when they did the oil change. Drove about 20 miles and began smelling like hot oil. Discovered missing cap. Was running rough and engine light is now on - LOTS of white smoke from tailpipe. Does this indicate damage somewhere? 2012 Chevy Cruze.

Engine light came on because car sensed a vacuum leak due to missing cap. The white smoke is from the oil splatter from missing cap. New cap and top off oil should take care of check engine light. May need to clean oil off engine to get rid of smoke and smell.

White smoke is not from under the hood. It's from the tailpipe. That's why I am concerned. Not from spatter on the engine.

Replace the cap, clean up the engine, top off the oil and see what happens. If the problem continues the oil change shop will be on the hook for repairs.
