finding a fault on my car

I get a howling type noise when engine is hot and lasts about 30 secs then
stops

I would look into the crankcase valve as the culprit, otherwise know as the CCV system. It comprises of many hoses. If yours was never replaced, I would looking into a kit and replace all the parts. Search online BMW E46 DIY CCV
