2004 Chrysler Pacifica battery/alternator/ground wire?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi. The battery on my 04 Pacifica started
dying. I assumed alternator. If I charge the
battery, I can drive around town here (little
town) but if I go too far, battery dies. My
battery indicator light stays on and before
car dies the ABS light comes on. But now,
the battery is fully charged but will not start.
All the lights are on. When I turn the key I
hear the starter clicking. Would a bad starter
cause my battery to die?

Also read that a lot of these cars have had to
have the ground wire changed and it solved
the issues. Could that be the problem with
my car?

Do a load test on alternator. Put voltmeter on battery. Pos to pos, neg to neg, and start car. What is voltage? 13.5 - 14.7? If so, keep prongs on battery, now have someone turn on high drain accessories like blower, high beams and radio. What is the voltage? Still in that range? If not bad alternator. If either voltage reading is outside this you have a bad alternator. Probably not your issue but too high a voltage is also a bad alternator. Bad regulator. Set meter to volts DC 20V setting if it is not an auto ranging meter.

Nine times out of ten when battery light comes on has something to do with alternator not charging could be a blown alternator fuse

I should mention that the car is not turning over. It just clicks and this is new. I'm thinking I have more than one problem going on. My boyfriend charged the battery the other day and went to pick up a pizza and ran out of gas. It was dark so he left the car at the pizza place and the next day he went and got gas, and the car would turn over but wouldn't start. He figured the battery wasn't charged enough at this point so he removed the battery and brought it home to charge. We took the battery back, put it in the car, and it wouldn't turn over. All you hear is a click.
