what would be the result of a serpentine belt that was not seating correctly

Recently I had a air con. compressor installed at a Cadillac dealership. The first one installed was faulty and was replaced after the seals failed within two days of the installation. Within three days of the second installation, while on the road my battery went dead and of course all the electrical conponents failed. Upon inspecting my battery posts I observed that the belt was over a 1/4 inch off of the top pully and was not seated correctly. Would this problem result in my alternator and battery failure?

yes it would. When a serpentine belt fails it basically means everything else in the engine fails. The water pump stops circulating coolant, the alternator stops producing amps, the power steering stops, and the air conditioner stops cooling. Newer vehicles have one single belt that runs everything so when that belt fails so does everything else.
