2006 BMW 525i license plate lamp malfunction paired with trunk lamp malfunction.

Asked by LenaBarbina Sep 19, 2019 at 07:57 PM about the 2006 BMW 5 Series 525i Sedan RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the left license plate lamp and it now shines brightly
but only when the trunk lid is open, but not if the trunk is all the
way open!  The trunk lid lamp works as well but not if the trunk is
all the way open.  Neither lamp works if the trunk is completely
closed.  The right license plate lamp works fine in all these
situations.  Any ideas?

Sounds like a wiring issue. Trace the wires back to the big wire loom on trunk, it gets bent over time and the wires bend and break due to opening and closing the trunk over the years. My guess is that one wire, the insulation is cracked.
