engine coolant overheating in less than a mile and half.

Asked by shoniwa Feb 22, 2014 at 08:13 AM about the 1995 BMW 5 Series 525i Sedan RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hie guys, my car has not been driving for close
to 8 months. But it's back on the road now. I
have driven it for 60km without any problems.
But now the temperature shoots to red within a
mile. I have checked oil and it's fine. No signs
of mixing problem. When engine idles the water
coolant in the radiator starts to rise and spill
over. How can I get my temp. Right!?

I would check thermostat first. Could also be the water pump failing.

Do a coolant system over haul that engine is know to have cooling system problems. The water pump impeller has most likely fell off.

This could be the truth about these bmw. Most likely if you had a radiator leak like me which replaced then about 5 to 6 months later it started to overheat again. To make this short I went through 3 radiator caps because the guy I bought the car from said they had done the engine and replaced the thermostat and water pump. Well what you guys are saying about check our thermostat and water pump because of impeller failure is correct. Finally I took thermostat out and yep it was bad then took water pump out and yep water pump was bad also impeller was bad. But I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to this problem anymore I noticed fan blade was wobbly and fan clutch didn’t look to good. So now that everything has been replaced for sure.its running A1 awesome for two months now. Hay I’m sure you new guys that are attempting to do this don’t forget the little vent screw when you are filling it up with antifreeze and turn your heater all the way up. GOOD LUCK GUYS
