I have a 2007 BMW 351i and I'm charging the battery. It was pulling 8 amps at the beginning and is still pulling 8 amps after 2 hours of charging. Why is that? Shouldn't the charge be tapering off?
2 hours at 8 amps is still a low charge rate, todays batteries really like slow low amperage charge rates so they can slowly build all of the cells at the same time, I would not worry about it yet let the battery charge overnight, then if it is still at that rate then you may have a bad cell. And don't just remove the battery or you could cause damage to the vehicles computer programming, it will need to be taken someplace where they have the proper tools to keep the system active during battery replacement. Very informative with good sound advice. Thanks Dave
Thanks for the points. I hope everything turned out to be good.
sounds like a dead cell. each cell is 2v with 6 cells total for 12v battery. if you ran a quality charger and the battery didn't recondition (take a full charge) then you likely have a dead cell. you can DIY the battery change, if you're a DIY/handy person. there are battery choices in the market (AGM, or lead acid) and they have different prices. A quality battery will last years. A cheap one will last fewer years. Choose wisely.
