can a 2011 camery check engine sensor go bad

About to buy a 2011 and they told me the check engine light came on last
night and they took it in to be looked at. Toyota said the sensor has gone bad
and needed to be replaced. Nothing else was wrong. I am suppose to go
and look at it in the morning and possible buy this for my daughter. But not
sure I can shake the feeling that I am being played. My wife just got a text
from him saying it was the O2 sensor that went bad and needed to be
replaced.  Can sensors go bad like that?

An O2 sensor can fail, yes. Was it one of the rear ones? Depending on the code, it will tell you which sensor it was. Most O2 sensor codes are not related to the sensor itself. Without knowing the 4 digit trouble code I can't help further. Have your own mechanic check it out before you purchase.
