this just started happening and the dealer says threre is nothing showing up on diagnostics,have had it in 2 times now and they can't duplicate the problem

If they can't figure it out, find some new mechanics- that use their eyes and ears and brains as well as their little diagnostic crutches- my best guess would be something is wrong with the key- or the ignition switch-

Change the ignition switch, sounds like something wrong inside and with all the ignition switch problems & recalls that have been going on that is the most reasonable cause. If that's not it you will have to start tracing wires in the starting system to find the cause. The problem w dealers is they don't like or want to work on problems that are not easily resolved. I complained about my alignment to my dealer and they said they checked it and it was "fine". I took it to a well known tire/front end shop, and it was out in both front and rear.

probably immobiliser but not sure as sometimes just opening and closing drivers door or moving gear lever from park into neutral and back to park allows the car to start Car is a 2008 Santa Fe CDX ...

I have a 2008 hyundai santa fe gls 4dr. I originally had a problem with the car starting in park, which at first i thought was the battery as it was still factory. I changed the battery and realized it was not the problem as the car elctronics worked flawless but there was not sound of turn over or clicking just nothing. I soon discovered the car would crank and run as expected when shift release was pressed and the car was put into neutral. I diagnosed it as a neutral safety switch but after driving i realized the car will shift into the park position but it is not recognized by the vehicle and the car easily rolls as if in neutral and makes a clicking sound every few inches(maybe centimeter, a very short distance). so in short my vehicle starts in neutral, rolls in park while clicking, all other gears work fine from what i can tell. Im stumped. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Will the parking pawl affect my ability to crank the car in park? 3 Answers
