probably immobiliser but not sure as sometimes just opening and closing
drivers door or moving gear lever from park into neutral and back to park
allows the car to start

Car is a 2008 Santa Fe CDX auto diesel

From what you explained and the engine does not turn over is what you mean, moving the shifter causes it to start, may be a problem with the neutral safety switch on the transmission. If this is a manual transmission, then check the clutch safety switch.

Sorry perhaps I did not explain properly This is an intermittent issue sometimes the car starts fine sometimes it turns over but will not fire up. The car is automatic and I start the car in Park Normally if it wont start a few lock and unlocks of the remote central locking keyfob sorts it out and the car starts, although sometimes just moving teh gear from park to neutral and back allows it to start or just opening and closing the drivers door allows it to start, its wierd and frustrating and I am more aimed towards it being an immobiliser problem
