Cooling issue with Silverado

my Silverado had a small coolant leak from the
water pump and temp would fluctuate between
210 mark and almost to the next tick line only at
idle. Replaced water pump(carquest brand) still
same result with coolant temp. Switched out the
thermostat for a new one (carquest brand) same
result with temp. Plug in scan tool. Engine temp
gets to 224 225 then fans kick on them will go
back down to 210. This only happens at idle.
Wondering if temp sensor should be replaced or
is it something more expensive.

It's suspicious that the fan comes on at 225, not 210 or lower. Test everything and you'll find the culprit. Might be a temperature switch or sensor, or air in the coolant that needs to be bled. It does seem that everything is working well, as this doesn't happen when the car's moving, only at slow speeds when the fan is needed.

This is going to be an airflow problem since it only happens at idle. Check the actual coolant temperature with a lazer type thermometer at the thermostat housing and see if it matches your scan tool. If the coolant temperature sensor is skewed you may not know it unless the actual coolant temperature is verified. You're only seeing what the PCM is seeing. There may be a second sending unit for the dash gauge only. Hope that helps! Jim
