Use synthetic instead of regular engine oil, for longer mileages

Asked by GuruXH9R9 Oct 28, 2018 at 05:31 PM about the 2009 Honda CR-V EX AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi, I own a 2009 Honda CRV. The manual indicates regular 5W20 engine oil is
required, but I would like to use  5W20 full synthetic oil (sub zero winters). Is
that ok, and can I drive 12,000 miles instead of the 5,000 miles on regular
engine oil? Thx

12,000 miles on an oil change? I wouldn't do it. 7,500 or once a year is what I do.

No, these engines tend to have issues with long oil change intervals. I have seen many K24s experience timing chain stretching as well. Stick with the recommended oil change intervals, synthetic oil will just make your engine much cleaner and better running.
