2009 Jeep Patriot Catalytic Converter - I'm so confused!

Asked by Jessica_1980 Apr 26, 2016 at 11:36 AM about the 2009 Jeep Patriot Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I failed my emissions test in Georgia (required to renew my tag.)  My
"Check Engine" light has been on quite some time, and then I was told it
was my catalytic converter.

I've been calling around for quotes and they're all over the board, and the
mechanics don't seem to know a lot about them.

Which catalytic converter do I need??  Under my hood, on the vehicle
emission control information, it shows the following:   U.S. EPA: T2  B4
LDV/LDT    OBD:CA II

Then the line below that shows:  California:   OBD: CA ii   Certified for sale
ULEV II qualified.

Do I have to get the 50-state converter even though I'm in GA?  Or can I
get just a federal 49-state?  Will the latter fit?  And I've tried to find a 50-
state for the Jeep Patriot and can't seem to find one anywhere.  Am I
reading it wrong and I actually have the federal converter?

It's a 2009 Jeep Patriot, Front wheel-drive, 4-cylinder.

I don't want to be ripped off at a repair shop. I can't afford that right now.

This is so confusing.  I'm a girl in distress!  Please help!

First check and see if your car is still under the emissions warranty from the manufacturer. Most car makers offer a 100K miles 8 year warranty on emissions. You can check this by running a carfax on the vin and clicking the Warranty tab. If it is still under this warranty then you can take it to a jeep dealer and they should do the work for free.

Looking at the exhaust systems for your vehicle, I can see why mechanics are not sure on this. One suggestion would be to go to a exhaust shop who should know what to put on there. Otherwise you may have to go to a dealership. As it is this is going to be expensive from what I have ben looking at. It would be the front catalytic converter that would need changing.
