Malfunction engine light

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After computer examination, the tech said that he was 99% sure that wires of
the harness were exposed and insulation was damaged. He said, from the
debri that had fallen, it looked as if a rodent of some sort had gone up inside
& chewed away at the wiring & insullation..  They would only be able to make
sure after taking the engine apart.  The ballpark figure he gave us(from the
Toyota dealer) was extremely high. We wonder if it would be a good idea to
just trade it in.

The wiring harness can be changed without removing engine,sounds like there wanting you to buy a new one,if car is in good shape,meaning runs and shifts good,no oil use,it would be worth fixing it,just not at a dealer,go have a independant mechanic take a look at it,you may see a big price change in replacing the harness.

Can you provide a little more history concerning this vehicle. What was happening BEFORE the MEL came on? Was the vehicle/engine running properly? I agree with T_S_T above. You usually do not have to "take the engine apart" in order to replace a wiring harness. I would agree...you might consider a second opinion.
