What could cause my stereo to freeze up where I can't turn the volume up or down. & it shuts off by itself and won't turn back on. The lights & all.

most likely a short in the wire or in the stereo itself. it could also be a bad fuse. try pulling the stereo out and checking the plug to make sure its still plugged in correctly and if its after market make sure all the wires are securely put together and covered appropriately with electrical or heat shrink
