subaru stuck in gear

my wife's subaru won't get out of gear, standard shift. i can start it but when i
go to let the clutch out it stalls. 197k miles, never happened befor

Not enough details. Since you can start it that means the clutch pedal is fully depressed, allowing the ignition to work. So when you then select 1st or R and let the clutch up slowly (normally), it stalls? Is the let-up geometry (release point) normal? When the clutch is fully depressed can you cycle through the 5 gears normally...and quietly? Keep talking....
