1993 ford mustang runs than dies

i have a 1993 ford mustang lx with a 2.3l it starts easy but dies as you let go of the key, but if you hold the key on it stays running only when the starters ingaged but the starter grinds because its runing then as so as you let go of the key again it dies any ideas?

the ignition switch is shot on the upper part of the steering column echlin part # KS6624 about $15.00 at napa. you will need a torx to remove the 2 screws holding it in place.
