Even if the vehicle still runs, it does not show an accurate charge from the alternator. The alternator not only runs the vehicle but charges the battery. Most of the time an alternator will get weak and the vehicle will run when jumped. However, it is not putting out enough current to charge the battery. Use a multi-meter and check the voltage being put out by the alternator. I'm not certain, but I believe it should read about 14 volts.

13.8 volts anything above that over charge...+terminal behind alt will get the ready you are after. But still don't get why you asked what you did???
