Won't Rev up no codes
My 2003 ford explorer 4.0. Will not Rev over 2000
rpm. Starts and runs fine. Will shift gears. But
running no codes. Any suggestions
How does it idle? Should be between 500 and 750 RPM's and running smoothly.

I have the exact same vehicle with the same engine. Doing 70 mph on the highway I'm barely at 1500 RPM's. Interested, I took mine out to see. From a dead stop and with full throttle start it barely reaches a little over 2000 RPM's during acceleration and the changing of gears. And mine is a Ford Remanufactured engine with only a few thousand miles on it. If it runs well with no obvious faults, I would not worry about it.
No this is a serious problem. I live in the mountains of WV and 2000 rpm is not good enough to make it up hills
Now, I can rev the engine past 3 and 4000 RPM while sitting with the gear in park, under no load. Will your engine rev higher in park? But be careful. Those engines have cam chains, one in front and one in the rear. The guides are prone to failure. If the rear guide fails, the engine has to come out of the vehicle to repair it. If the engine is original to the vehicle, and high mileage I suggest you take it to a mechanic for a diagnosis. It should definitely rev over 2000 in park. In fact, you can red line it over 6000 when it under no load.
If your engine never gets over 2,000 rpm in full throttle acceleration there is something wrong and it must be really sloooow. You should see nearly 5,000 rpm at shift points.
I have had this Explorer for a couple years. This is a new problem always reved fine before. This is why I am asking. I am aware of the cam chain issue and yes mine has high miles. $250 just for the special tool kit to remove the rear cam chain after pulling engine
OK, So it's not reving higher while in park and it did so before and not throwing codes. Mine did do the same thing and I cleaned the IAC, but to no avail. Brought to a mechanic and he stated the IAC had to be replaced. It ran fine after that. See if you can locate a testing video on the net. It's not a relatively cheap part, but easy to change.
Ohhhhhhhhhh it is slow out of the hole FOR. The 5 speed overdrive tranny shifts quickly. Even at 90, it's only turning at about 2500 RPM's.
2,000 rpm means you are only getting a fraction of the engines power. What is your 0-60 time? 2 minutes?

Have you checked the catalytic converter? If it is mostly plugged up it would severely limit the engine breathing.
Had one change F.O.R. less than a year ago because of the idiot light. As I indicated before, I can rev the engine while sitting in park to 4K easily, I don't want to push it past that. But I never get anywhere near 5K, not even at 90mph on the highway. Think maybe the other cat could be clogged up, the one which was not changed? The one which was changed was on the drivers side.
I have not checked the cat yet. In the process of trying to change fuel filter , which has turned into an ordeal.
Do you have the proper tool to remove the filter? Maybe you have one of those tools made of plastic which comes in a set of different sizes. Yes, I've had those before and they are a pain. Try to find a set in an auto parts store which are made out of metal. You can grasp them easier to get a little leverage to get them into the slot for removal.
Make sure you get the pressure out of the lines or you will never get the lines off! Slap the right front kick panel and the inertia will trip then start it till it dies then take off the horse shoe clip and the you will need the tool on the other end!
