My Ford Explorer wheel shift
from Park to reverse to drive
and so forth and so on but will
not engage in any of the above-
mentioned gears

The transmission is sealed so there is a specific procedure to check the fluid level in the vehicle. Absent an obvious leak, I doubt that is the problem. Time for a tranny shop visit.
