1966 Ford Mustang Engine Queston
I recently purchased a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe and its a project car. I
bought it for around $4000, it runs but it needs a lot of work. It currently has
a V6 in it, but I would like a V8 maybe a 289 and I was wondering which
route I should go. Should I purchase the engine of my liking and install it or
go ahead and sell this car and try and find one with the engine I want. I am
new to cars but I'm learning.
what is your favorite year...what do you want to do with it ..cruse..show, ...race... why mess with the 289ci when you can have so much more...any v8 swap will require the same amount of work...so go big..or go home ...enjoy,k > http://www.proformanceunlimited.com/specs/343_350dropAL.html

A '66 Mustang would have originally been equipped with either a L6 200 CID, or a V8 289 from the factory. You need to decide what you want to do with the car, your budget, and the timeframe involved. You obviously liked the car, 6 cylinder and all, when you bought it. So what happened to make you question your decision? There's plenty of different reasons people buy different cars. Me, I'm an originality guy. I like seeing cars restored to showroom condition. Not customized and that sort of thing. But that's just me. Opinions vary. We have a lady who comes into the NAPA where I work every now and then with a '63 Chevy Nova. It's a very plain jane car. Six cylinder, stick shift on the column, radio delete plate on the dash. But it was her late Uncle's car and it's restored to the original condition of when he bought it new in '63. I think it's a great old car and she's very proud of it!! I buy cars that I like. Not what is in vogue, or worth "millions" once restored. I bought my '70 Pontiac Catalina and '66 Cadillac Calais Sedan for that reason. I liked them. There was really nothing special about either car except that I liked them. I had both cars a long time and got a lot of enjoyment out of both vehicles. That's what is important! you will only have enough room for a small block engine and you will have to change your springs and spindle and caliper or drums depending on your brakes if you have power steering your fine if you don,t you,ll need some power to steer the cae
Appreciate it guys. To answer your question Js08016, I bought intending to put a V8 in it. After thinking about it, just wasn't too sure if I would be better off selling the '66 I have now and purchasing one with a V8 289 or maybe something better already in it. (Money wise) I definitely like them original as well.
If your car has a V6 in it then that is not original. I would do some research to see if it came with a inline 6 or a 289. I think all the 6 banger cars had 4 lug wheels as well as other light duty parts. It would be easy to convert it to a 289 but I would go period correct with the conversion with all OEM type parts.
