2007 gear shifter has a lot of play and will not lock into gears?

Asked by Alana Jan 27, 2017 at 02:19 PM about the 2007 Ford Focus ZX3 SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving in a parking lot (in 2nd
gear) and felt small pop and then my
car would not lock into any gears. My
car will start, and drive in 2nd gear
only. It will not reverse. I've had my
friends look at it and they said the
bushing and cables are fine. The
shifter has a lot of play and will not
engage into gears. Also, there was a
ginding noise for about 2 months
before this happened that sounded like
I needed power steering fluid, but
theGoogle PSF tank is full. However, it
lost power steering. The clutch is fine.
Could anyone please, help me?

Thank you

sounds like the grinding noise you heard could have been the transmission going bad. that pop sound you heard was probably something that finally broke in the transmission. you probably should find a transmission specialist.

It sounds like it might have what is called a slave cylinder in a ford ranger straight drive and this is what maybe did the popping ! There should be a little plastic jar under the hood up above the brake buster ! Check it for brake fluid DOT 3 or 4 .

Slave-cylinders set between the motor and on the spline of the tranny & inside the bell-housing ! Look into it ! They cost about $130.00 and some change the last time i checked on one in Florida !
