2007 Camry heat not working

I noticed the other day when I turned the heat on I was
getting only cold air. I tried today to run the heater and
same thing until I put the system on auto. Then I started to
get warm air but after about 5-10 min all of a sudden my
"water temperature high" warning came on and the
temperature gauge instantly shot all the way up. I
immediately turned the heater off and the warning went
off and the car temperature gauge shot right back to
normal temp. I was able to keep driving to my destination
with no issues. What could be the issue. Thanks in

checking the coolant levels are at proper level and not low, an actuator may be the issue.

It's the auto start fan switch on the electronic fans in the front

Thanks for your answers. It is now leaking coolant. I'm thinking maybe the thermostat is stuck open and maybe a hose or radiator cap is bad. I'm going to start with those first
