Bad valve lifter. The lifter no longer can hold oil pressure to push up on the push rod to the rocker arm to push down on the valve.

Either that or worn out camshaft, cams use to be a problem back in the late 60's right up to the late 80's and the started to drop off sharply but it still does happen. As for the timing, it could be a worn out distributor drive gear on the cam or the driven gear on the distrubutor, or the timing chain and gear set is badly worn. So there is a lot of things to check.

A worn camshaft will not change the static ignition timing unless the distributor drive gear is worn out. Is it possible that the camshaft is broken? Or is the timing chain or distributor bad?
