What could make grinding sound during start up on Chevy Express 1500 Van with new Starter

It supposedly got a new starter put on at repair shop, but when starting van it makes a terrible grinding sound, but starts up and runs fine. What could be causing this? I am taking it back to the repair shop but just need a heads up on potential problem, don't want to be blind sided by an answer like: It is not the starter but you need this or that and that is what is causing the starter to etc.......

ts ,or no shim at all.... or now you will chew up the flex plate...take it back to the shop...

They can loosen them and add the sim, shims or 1/2 shims to achieve that drawing. takes awesome patience...Job was just a pussy.
