I just had this exact problem on a 1996 buick regal 3.8l , no visible coolant leaks on ground, but I was losing coolant and fast, I could smell it also. My fans work and everything. REPLACE YOUR RADIATOR CAP FIRST CHEAPEST ROUTE AND QUITE POSSIBLY YOUR PROBLEM

this happened to my 3.8 and it was a OD shift solenoid in the tranny. just drive in 3rd and not overdrive. i went out of town my husband didn't remember and ended up blowing it up. My friend was having the same issue with his Caddy and I suggested he do the 3rd driving and stay out of OD and it worked for him as well. not sure why it happens but my ex brother in law a mechanic trace it to that.

Make sure the radiator cooling fans are coming on. To check, unplug the coolant temperature sensor and start the engine. The service engine soon light will come on, ignore it. Your radiator cooling fans should come on at high speed. Hope that helps! Jim
