Loud clicking behind wheel

Asked by ms0979 May 05, 2015 at 10:25 PM about the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 07 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. It is making a loud clicking noise from behind the driver side wheel. It is very bad if in 4 wheel drive and quieter when in 2 wheel drive. It is also having trouble disengaging so I don’t think it’s a cv joint and I’m sure the problems are related. What could be causing this?

The transfer case might be having a hard time disengaging 4WD if your driveline is wound up. Never use 4WD on the road or when you have traction, or you could wind up the driveline. The clicking is likely from the joint on the prop shaft on the transfer case side. If you have a lift on it, it causes severe angles at this joint, which could cause it to bind or wear quicker than normal. Check for play in the joint or grease in the surrounding area.
