94 Chevy Suburban 1500 k electrical problems

Asked by CelticWarlord May 04, 2019 at 05:43 PM about the 1994 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My speedometer started going crazy,
jumping around, my blinkers stopped
working and my truck lost speed. I had the
pedal all the way down and it wouldn't go
over 25mph. I then stopped at at a red light
and my truck died completely (lost all
power) and my hazards wouldn't even turn
on. I had just put a new battery in. I don't
know what's wrong maybe the alternator?

I forgot to mention that when I was losing power my truck starter putting like it was running out of gas. Then I heard a sound like it pushed something from the engine to the back. Almost as if it wanted to backfire. I don't know if this is common to an alternator.

I figured it out or my mechanic roommate did. The cables connecting my positive battery cable to the alternator were totally shot, they were all black and burnt up. So essentially I was completely running off of my battery draining it.
