Saturn SL2 2001 Struggles for power, and shuts of if we try to drive it?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Now right now I am posting this for my dad, and trying to remember what so far he has
replaced and with what brand. So far he has replaced allot as we ran into snowball
problems.

Code problem P0300 and P0172

On a note my dad had the Air intake taken off

Also this light started coming on. We replaced a piece on the manifold with a repair
metal repair kit because the plastic piece on the old one broke. We don't think its the
metal piece, but we can't figure out why its coming on. Everything looks fine. We know
what it means, but we don't know why its coming on.

So far what we have replaced
-Spark plugs
-o2 sensor on the engine
-plug wires
-Manifold
-fuel pump
-fuel regulator
-fuel injectors
-Coil packs
-Engine control module ECM
-water temperature sensor
-PCM
-crank shaft sensor

That picture appears to be a part of a hard vacuum line. Is that piece hollow? Also have you checked your cat converter? If it's stopped up it will cause similar issues.

So far it seems hollow to me. Yeah we keep getting suggestions about the cat converter, though he is being stubborn about it.

If that piece is hollow and you can blow thru it then it's a vacuum line. Look around the intake area for the other small end or some place where the big and small ends plug into. Some fuel pressure regulators use that type of vacuum line. It's also used for some vacuum lines going thru the fire wall and cruise control units. If it does go to the fuel pressure regulator and is not hooked up the car would be struggling for power and shutting off when you try to drive it.

Pull out the o2 sensor and start the car up. If it runs like that, the cat is bad.

Let anyone know that reads this in the future it was the catalytic converter. Like what Alex said to test it, we pulled the o2 sensor out and it ran well. So the cat was bad and we replaced fairly cheap too. Only cost us $10 bucks for the part.
