What would cause the RPM to run high in my 2001 Saturn L200?

When I press on the gas to go the RPM go up but the car boggles down?

Is the car a standard or automatic ? Standard sound like clutch slip but you would smell it slipping. Automatic transmission could mean you either need fluid or the transmission is starting to go (aka need service or replacement).
