Can I put straight water in the rad in the summer months instead of rad coolant

No. Use coolant. Otherwise rust will begin to form and you will cause a lot of trouble for yourself

Tom is right, as always, that's the reason I said that, you will have to flush it, besides coolant lubricates the water pump. I was not disputing Tom, we were typing at the same time

If your thermostat begins to rust up, it won't open. If you decide not to use coolant keep an eye on the temperature gauge

That Red coolant, Dexcool, reacts with regular coolant to form a goo. Do not add coolant to the radiator if you still have dexcool in it. Clean and FLUSH the system first, then replace the coolant with a mix of at minimum 50/50, maximum 70 (coolant)/30 (water if you live in a northern climate where the temp can drop sub zero and stay there for extended periods.
