car wouldnt go in reverse or forward then car died

my car had the oil indicator showing up
periodically but i checked oil it was fine so i just
ignored it i came home the car wouldnt go in
reverse just forward so i shut the car off turned it
back on it just went forward then it wouldnt go
back or forward then died out couldnt start back
up had it towed to mechanic where it is now he
called me told me car needs a starter to start the
car back up if the starter was going would it cause
the car not to go back and forward

It's possible the starter decided to quit at that time , I've seen it before and got blamed , now I don't work on peoples cars any more
