Head replacement

Asked by Olmuletrl Jul 21, 2007 at 09:15 AM about the 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our 97 had overheated and was leaking antifreeze around the head, we changed the head w/new gasket. I'm not sure if the old head was cracked or warped. The head came off a 96 cavalier that we put back
on. Now it won't idle, has no power and low compression. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, we did torque the head according to specs
and the rockers too. This engine is a 2.2 Ltr. auto.

Sounds like the block is warped. If the vehicle has overheated this is fairly common. A new head will not fix this problem, you would need to have the block "trued" or machined flat to mate with the new head.

thanx littlehorn 4 the info. I was also told that I may have rings that seized up. I had one cylinder that had no compression.
