Sticking Accelerator

Asked by jdavis6205 Aug 06, 2010 at 04:40 PM about the 1997 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The accelerator on my 1997 Z3 sometimes sticks in the up position when I'm stopped at a light, or when accelerating from coasting. I have to hit it hard with my foot to push it down to accelerate. Any ideas?

You can try to isolate the problem. Disconnect the accelerator from the trottle body and see if the problem is with the throttle body or the cable from the pedal. Michael

BMW has gone "fly-by-wire" for quite some time even then! For the issue of sticky accelerator pedal, post the question on a Toyota forum for expert advice. LOL.

For those who are still googling this all these years later, the problem is at the throttle body itself. If you go to the other end of the cable and just actuate the throttle without using the cable or accelerator pedal, you should still be able to feel it sticking which tells you for sure where the problem is. Confirmed? Great. Clean the butterfly valves themselves; on these cars they tend to stick shut at very high mileages after they've grown a good amount of deposits. Also yes it's a cable throttle, NOT a fly-by-wire, so you can lube the cable but a stuck-shut condition is almost certainly going to be at the throttle body.
