Volvo S80 head gasket

Asked by Feb 19, 2017 at 03:34 AM about the 2002 Volvo S80 2.9

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just bought a 2002s80, I've only put 2k miles on it
so far which brings it to 70k.  On my drive to work
yesterday it started smoking and the thermostat
needle just stopped working.  I checked the oil and
it was almost completely empty.  I filled the oil and
then brought it back to the dealer and they are
saying blown head gasket.  Is that possible this
soon into driving a car or does this sound more like
this guy sold me the car without disclosing all the
problems?

Things break and it broke on you ride, he sold it to you working. You should have had the car looked over by a trained technician. Buyer beware, most states a car is sold as is....good luck

If the smoke was thick white smoke then it is likely that the head gasket is blown. The low oil level may be caused by the head gasket failure. It would be difficult to tell if the dealer sold you a car with a known problem. Sometimes it is a good idea to get used cars looked over by a mechanic even though it may cost $100 to $150 bucks. The Volvo S80 is a great car with a pretty good powertrain. Get it fixed and enjoy it.
