1998 Volvo S70

Service light was coming on after start, then
shutting off after a while. I added oil, and the light
still comes on but turns off much sooner. Would
low oil cause the service light to come on.

The "service engine soon" light automatically comes on at set intervals, and it will turn on and off. There is nothing in particular that will cause it to come on. Many people just pull the bulb. If you are referring the to check engine light, scan it for codes.
