98 cavalier will not shift from first, speedometer not working ,and new vss sensor

new vss output sensor installed, car ran fine until put in storage for 8 months ago

I guess I asked in hast, while checking wiring from vss to ecm plug for ohms, pulled tape off the vss plug and found 10" up from end the wires had broken off. my guess is age and heat from motor/trans broke down the wire up in the harness.
