replace steering rack

do i need to disconnect battery to unhook steering column to rack on 2005
beetle?

Yes. Even though the steering rack is not directly related to anything electrical moving things around to get the rack out and the new one in might cause something to touch a live wire or the battery itself. Computers are very fussy about power surges and short circuits. So are fuses. Be sure to find out if you need to hook up a memory saver device BEFORE you disconnect the negative battery cable. If you need to and don't the computer will need to be reprogrammed by the Dealer. Hope that helps! Jim
