I changed the transmission in a 2002 Beetle 1.8 turbo, and I'm having problems. You
have to shift down to third to get it to read it's in drive on the dash and gear shift, and
then it acts like it's in third, sluggish start, and revs out around fifty. It also makes a
whirring noise when it is first started and noises when changing gears. It was used....

Sound,s like you may have another bad tranny.

These transmissions have a "limp home" mode, where a faulty transmission will function but remain in third gear in order to "limp home". You can scan the transmission for fault codes with vagcom or similar.

1998 beetle. Went for oil change. As soon as they completed it my check engine light came on. They checked code, was some emmissions code. Okay so the light goes out 2 days later. A few days later the car wont start, like it is out of gas, it's turning but not catching. I let it sit for 1/2 hr then it starts and the engine light back on. Everything fine for a few days then the same thing happens out of the blue. Just happened again to me. Car was fine, no light on then i go somewhere, park it, get back in and it wont start like its out of gas...let it sit for half hour and then it starts like nothing was wrong and the engine light back on now.
