Is it my Front or Rear Differential or both?

Asked by Will_Hunt Dec 08, 2016 at 05:08 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1999 Chevy Tahoe 4x4. After a series of high
pitched whirling I experience my differential
go out on the highway. I pull over and put it
in park and try drive again and it just revs
with cracking sounds...While Pulling it
around the corner to a Family members
house (4wheels down in neutral) I still hear
cracking noises (Bearings shot?) My
question is has my rear diff or front diff gone
out or maybe both?

Check the transfer case lubricant for proper level and condition. Also check the differentials fluid front and rear. Odds are it is the transfer case.
