2005 jette can't turn the key all the way

Asked by ALB_4213 Feb 18, 2017 at 11:23 PM about the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta GLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 Jetta. I recently drove it and had no problem
starting it. Then I came back out and the key wouldn't
turn. I messed with it and I can get it turned enough for it
to unlock the wheel but there is so much tension in the
ignition I can't even get it to the stay unlocked without
holding the key. Anyone have any clue what this is?

If your parked in a way that there is tension on the steering wheel it will put pressure against the steering wheel lock. Try moving the steering wheel in the opposite direction of the tension in the steering wheel.

There isn't tension on the wheel. I tried to move the wheel that didn't help. The problem is tension in the ignition. Like there is a counter weight when trying to tie the key.

Then the steering column covers would have to come off and look at the lock cylinder that the key goes into.
