99 chevrolet tahoe transfer case not engaging

Asked by santoyomariano Jun 22, 2014 at 09:45 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe LS 4-Door RWD

Question type: General

Hello i have a 99 chevrolet tahoe Last winter i noticed the 4x4 wasn't working. So i
decided to go outside and put it in drive and let it coast forward then pressed the 4hi
button. I heard a like click noise. It sounds to me as if it is the actuator on the front
differential engaging. Anyways I left it in drive and set the emergency brake. I then
jacked the front end up and spun the drivers side wheel with my hand. It moved freely i
then noticed that the driveshaft was spinning with the wheel. So basically The front
wheels are locking to the driveshaft. But the transfer case is not locking to the drive
shaft. Is there a test i can do to see what is the issue im thinking it is something inside
the transfer case but am not sure PLEASE! HELP!
