What will cause my temp gauge to red line. After a few miles?

Asked by GuruD98X9 Aug 05, 2017 at 12:48 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu LS FWD

Question type: General

My 1999 Chevy Malibu, will red line. then drop. The other day. It red lined and stayed there. The car was ready to stall. I parked it and let it cool. I made it home before it started to act up again. It has 88 k on the, v6-3.1-J. Any ideas . Thanks Dave.

I'd like to know the engine temp in degrees F? Does the coolant reservoir fill up in a hurry, does it boil? Does the radiator fan work? I agree with Thomas, it could be the thermostat? It could be the water pump or your getting combustion gases in the coolant, a gasket problem.

Very low coolant level is a possibility but a sticking thermostat is my guess.

i've had a water pump go out around that much miles.. check the bottom weep hole. i'd go with a thermostat change too. it is time.
