1992 golf gl diesel conversion

Asked by Patrick Dec 23, 2013 at 03:38 PM about the 1992 Volkswagen Golf 4 Dr GL Hatchback

Question type: Car Customization

I've got a 1992 golf GL with an automatic transmission and a totaled 2001 Jetta with a manual and diesel TDI. I am looking at taking the engine and tranny out of my jetta and putting it into my golf. Does anybody have any tips or pointers? Anything i should know? PS after it's all said and done I will have a perfectly good gas engine and tranny for sale.

So in order to "correctly" install the diesel in a "non" diesel auto you are ready to change out - #1 the exhaust (since it is different due to emissions and operating system requirements), #2 the cooling system (radiator), #3 the electrical system (since it is different due to fuses and controllers, #4 the drive system "mounts" (as diesels are heavier), #5 the fuel system (since you cant run diesel fuel down thru a gasoline fuel filter system due to pressures and filter design) for the benefit of what ? Not to mention any number of other things I might not have mentioned or the cost to make the changes.
